Eco-Friendly Electric Toothbrush NZ: 2026 Buyer's Guide
Share
Looking for an eco-friendly electric toothbrush in New Zealand, or a bamboo electric toothbrush that cuts down on plastic? Most electric toothbrushes clean well, but almost all of them come with a plastic handle and plastic brush heads that end up in landfill every few months. This guide covers what to look for in a lower-waste electric toothbrush, how the Crescent Nest Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush compares, and everything you need to know about buying one in NZ: delivery times, shipping costs and where to see it in person. If you are comparing eco toothbrushes in NZ, start here.
Crescent Nest is 100% New Zealand owned and operated, and a Certified B Corporation. We deliver across New Zealand and Australia.
What to look for in an eco-friendly electric toothbrush
An electric toothbrush is a long-term purchase, so the parts you replace matter more than the handle. These are the five things worth checking:
- Replaceable heads made from better materials. You'll replace a brush head about every three months. Plastic heads add up fast; bamboo heads can be composted once the bristles are removed.
- Bristle material. Most bristles are petroleum-based nylon. Plant-based alternatives, such as castor-oil nylon, reduce the fossil-fuel content of every head.
- Battery life and charging. A long battery life means fewer charges and less wear on the battery over the life of the brush. USB-C charging means one less cable.
- Repairability. A handle that can be returned, repaired or refurbished stays out of landfill for longer.
- Cleaning performance. Sustainability only works if you'll actually use it. A sonic brush with a built-in timer and a gentle mode makes a two-minute routine easy.
How the Crescent Nest Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush compares
- Sonic cleaning: up to 40,000 vibrations per minute, removing up to 5x more plaque than manual brushing.
- 5 brushing modes, including a Sensitive mode for gums that need a gentler clean.
- 2-minute timer with a 30-second pacer, so you cover every part of your mouth.
- Battery that lasts up to 60 days on a single USB-C charge.
- FSC-certified bamboo brush heads with medium-soft, vegan, plant-based PA1010 castor-oil bristles, rounded at the tips to be gentle on gums.
- Waterproof (IPX7) for use in the shower.
- Circular Care System: return your old handle and receive a renewed one, so handles stay in use for longer. Refurbished toothbrushes are also available.
Customers rate Crescent Nest 4.8 out of 5 from 450+ reviews across our range, including 228 for the Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush (October 2026).

Bamboo toothbrush heads: how to dispose of them in NZ
Replace your brush head about every three months. When it's time:
- Pull out the bristle tufts with pliers (needle-nose are easiest). Hold the head over a jar or newspaper so the nylon doesn't scatter.
- Break open the bamboo head and remove the small internal connector that attaches it to the handle. Put the connector in your household rubbish.
- Put the bare FSC-certified bamboo in your home compost or council green-waste bin.
When the toothbrush itself reaches the end of its life, recycle it as e-waste. Find your nearest drop-off at recycling.kiwi.nz, or check with Bunnings, Noel Leeming or The Warehouse, which often accept small electronics. Our recycling and disposal guide has the full details.
FAQ
Is Crescent Nest a New Zealand company?
Yes. Crescent Nest is 100% New Zealand owned and operated, and a Certified B Corporation.
How much is shipping within New Zealand?
NZD 7.50, or free on orders over NZD 150. Orders usually arrive 1-3 business days after dispatch.
Can I buy Crescent Nest in a store?
Yes. Our NZ stockists include dental clinics, wellness and beauty stores in Auckland and Hamilton. See the list above or our stockists page.
How often should I replace the bamboo brush head?
About every three months. You can then compost the bamboo once the bristles and connector are removed.
Are the bristles soft?
Our bamboo brush heads have medium-soft, vegan castor-oil bristles with rounded tips. Paired with Sensitive mode, they suit most people with sensitive teeth or gums.
Is there a plastic-free electric toothbrush?
Not completely. Any electric toothbrush needs a sealed case for the battery and motor, and our bristles are a plant-based nylon made from castor oil. What we have changed is the part you throw away four times a year: the brush head is FSC-certified bamboo, which you can compost once the bristles and connector are removed.
How long does the battery last?
Up to 60 days on a single USB-C charge.
