Introducing Castor-Oil Bristles
Share
Handles get all the sustainability hype, but the bristles you actually put in your mouth decide whether your daily routine is truly planet smart, or just greenish. We are proud to launch the Crescent Nest Castor-Oil Bristle Head, a plant-based upgrade that finally balances top tier plaque removal with a dramatically lighter footprint.
Why Bristle Material Matters
Traditional electric heads rely on fossil-nylon or PBT polyester: great for cleaning, terrible for landfill. At the other extreme, natural boar hair composts nicely but can’t match hygiene standards and isn’t exactly vegan friendly. We needed a middle path.
Castor-Oil Bristles - How They’re Made
- Castor beans grow in semi-arid farmland with minimal irrigation.
- The oil is extracted, polymerised and spun into nylon 11, chemically identical to conventional nylon but 100 % bio-sourced.
- Bristles are precision tapered for sonic vibration, then fitted to our compostable bamboo collar.
Result: a bristle tough enough for 40,000 vibrations per minute, yet born from a carbon-capturing plant, not petroleum.
Performance You’ll Feel
- Plaque removal: a 23 % edge over manual brushing on par with premium plastic heads.
- Gum comfort: rounded tips glide over enamel; 36 % less gum soreness versus stiff PBT fibres.
- Shape retention: castor oil nylon keeps its spring for the full three-month cycle, even in hot bathrooms.
Sustainability by the Numbers
Metric | Standard Nylon | Castor-Oil Nylon |
---|---|---|
Fossil feedstock | 100% | 0–1% (trace additives) |
CO₂-eq per kg | 6.7 kg | 3.9 kg (-40%) |
End-of-life | Landfill | Landfill |
Annual brush-plastic waste* | 45 g | ≈ 6 g (-85%) |
*Assumes four head changes per year.
Hygiene & Ethics
- BPA and phthalate free, no nasty additives.
- Vegan & cruelty free, castor crops don’t compete with food staples and require zero animal products.
- ISO 20200 tested bamboo collar, home composts in 12-18 months (cool weather heaps may need a bit longer).
Why We Believe This Is the Best Option on the Market
- Performance: matches the cleaning power of top shelf plastic heads.
- Planet: 40 % lower cradle to gate emissions and up to 85 % less plastic was
- Hygiene: moisture-resistant fibres that resist bacterial growth better than natural hair.
- Ethics: plant-based, vegan, produced in a living wage supply chain.
Until a truly home compostable bristle delivers identical performance, castor-oil nylon is the most responsible, high performing choice available, and now it’s yours in a click.
