Crescent Nest Wins Product Sustainability Award
Share
We’re incredibly proud to share that the Crescent Nest Sonic Toothbrush has been awarded a Product Sustainability Award.
For us, this is more than a milestone. It’s a meaningful recognition of the idea that has shaped Crescent Nest from the beginning: everyday products can be designed better. Better for people. Better for the planet. Better for the future we live into with every small daily choice.
In the words of the award organisers, “Crescent Nest has been recognised for rethinking everyday oral care through a circular design model that reduces waste at source, extends product life, and challenges the reliance on single use plastics.”
That is exactly what we set out to do.
We created Crescent Nest because oral care has long been treated as a category where waste is simply part of the deal. Plastic-heavy design, short product lifecycles, and throwaway habits have been normalised for too long. We believed there was a better way: an award-winning sustainable toothbrush that could deliver a beautiful clean while reducing unnecessary waste at every stage of the product journey.
This award tells us that the industry is starting to recognise that possibility too.
An award-winning sustainable toothbrush built to challenge the old model
At the heart of this recognition is our modular sonic toothbrush system.
Instead of following the traditional disposable model, Crescent Nest was designed around a more thoughtful one: a durable long life handle paired with replaceable brush heads, so you replace only what you need rather than throwing out the entire product. That modular design is central to why our toothbrush has been recognised with a Product Sustainability Award.
The judging panel highlighted this directly, noting that Crescent Nest has taken “an intentionally designed, low impact approach to a traditionally unsustainable product, the electric toothbrush.”
That matters to us because design is where sustainability either becomes real or remains just a marketing phrase.
It’s easy to talk about being eco-friendly. It is much harder to rethink a product category from the ground up and ask:
- How can this create less waste at source?
- How can this last longer?
- How can this be easier to repair, renew, and keep in use?
- How can a daily essential feel premium without costing the planet more than it should?
Those questions shaped every decision behind Crescent Nest.
Why this award matters
Winning a Product Sustainability Award is meaningful because it recognises not only what the product is made from, but how the entire system works.
The award organisers described Crescent Nest as “an emerging leader in sustainable product design, demonstrating how small, purpose driven businesses can create practical, scalable solutions that reduce waste and reshape everyday consumption habits.”
That phrase — practical, scalable solutions — feels especially important.
Because sustainability should not live only in niche products, perfectionism, or abstract ideals. It should show up in the things we use every day. It should feel practical. It should feel normal. It should be built into the routine.
A toothbrush is one of the most frequently used products in daily life. That makes it a powerful place to rethink materials, waste, product lifespan, and end-of-life pathways. If something used twice a day can be made more responsibly, that change matters at scale.
Performance still matters and always will
Sustainability on its own is not enough. A toothbrush still has to be a good toothbrush.
That’s why it meant so much to see the evaluation team recognise not just the lower impact design, but the brushing experience itself. In the award feedback, they noted that “The toothbrush’s performance and power is excellent, with multiple brush modes and strengths leaving teeth feeling smooth and clean.”
We’ve always believed that customers should not have to choose between a better clean and a lighter footprint.
That is why the Crescent Nest Sonic Toothbrush combines thoughtful materials with advanced sonic performance, including multiple brushing modes, a long-lasting battery, and a timer with quadpacer to support a more complete routine. It was designed to feel like an upgrade in every sense, not a compromise disguised as sustainability.
The judges also called out the recharge base, saying they “loved the well designed recharge base which minimises mess and is easy to clean with its sleek design.”
That kind of detail matters to us too. Good design is often found in the quiet things: what feels intuitive to use, what stays clean more easily, what fits naturally into daily life, what reduces friction instead of adding it.
Circular care is what set Crescent Nest apart
One of the strongest reasons the panel awarded Crescent Nest was our genuine refurbishment pathway.
As they explained, “A key factor in the judging panel’s decision was the inclusion of a genuine refurbishment pathway, where returned handles are repaired and put back into circulation. This closed loop approach meaningfully reduces electronic waste and sets the product apart from typical electric toothbrushes, where disposal is often the default outcome.”
This is a huge part of what makes Crescent Nest different.
Our Circular Care System was built on a simple principle: products should not be discarded by default if they can be repaired, renewed, or reused. Returned handles are inspected, repaired where possible, and put back into circulation through our refurbishment pathway. What cannot be restored is responsibly recycled.
That system is not an add-on. It is part of the product philosophy itself.
We often talk about sustainability in terms of packaging or material choice, but product life extension is one of the most important levers we have. A product that lasts longer, stays in use, and has a path beyond first ownership is fundamentally different from one designed for fast replacement.
That is why this recognition means so much. It shows that circular design in oral care is not only possible, it is valuable, visible, and worth rewarding.
Thoughtful materials, responsible production, and lower-impact choices
The award also recognised Crescent Nest’s broader lifecycle thinking.
In the founder’s words, the toothbrush is distinguished by “the clear commitment to responsible production across its lifecycle. Considered supplier selection, reduced impact cardboard packaging, and lower footprint freight choices all contribute to a more sustainable alternative within a category that has traditionally relied on high turnover and plastic intensive design.”
This reflects how we think about sustainability at Crescent Nest: not as one feature, but as a chain of choices.
That includes:
- responsibly selected manufacturing partners
- FSC-certified bamboo brush heads
- plant-based castor-oil bristles
- reduced-impact cardboard packaging
- lower-footprint freight choices where possible
- a circular system for repair, return, and refurbishment
It also includes accountability. Crescent Nest is a Certified B Corporation, which reflects our commitment to meeting high standards of social and environmental responsibility, transparency, and accountability. For us, that matters because sustainability should be built into how a business operates, not just how a product is advertised.
From New Zealand to a global stage
Crescent Nest was created in New Zealand with a simple but ambitious belief: that small daily actions, done with care, can create meaningful change over time.
Winning a global Product Sustainability Award is a reminder that this idea travels.
It tells us that thoughtful design, circular systems, and lower-waste product choices are resonating beyond one market. It tells us there is room in the world for oral care that is not built around disposability. And it gives us even more motivation to keep raising the bar.
We’re especially proud that this recognition shines a light on what purpose-driven businesses can do when they stay close to their values, even in categories dominated by conventional design.
One brush, one tree, one better routine
Crescent Nest has always been about more than a single product. It is about building a better everyday system — one that supports healthier routines while leaving a lighter footprint.
That includes our One Brush, One Tree commitment, where every Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush purchased helps fund a tree through our partnership with One Tree Planted.
For us, that initiative reflects something bigger: that the smallest rituals, repeated every day, can become part of a more positive cycle. Better care. Better habits. Better design. Better outcomes.
Thank you for being part of this journey
To receive this award is deeply encouraging. But more than anything, it makes us grateful.
Grateful to everyone who has supported Crescent Nest.
Grateful to every customer who has chosen to try a different kind of oral care.
Grateful to the people who believe that sustainability and performance should go hand in hand. And grateful that this category is starting to shift.
This award belongs to the product, yes — but it also belongs to the mission behind it.
We’re proud of how far Crescent Nest has come, and even more excited about where we can go next.
